The FDA and the case of Ketek

This office is reviewing several different sources of liver failure and will address inquiries regarding antibiotics such as Zithromax® as well as those related to other suspected causes. Zithromax® (Azithromycin), sometimes called the Z-pack®, is a highly popular and highly potent antibiotic sold by Pfizer.  Zithromax® can cause severe liver damage and liver failure resulting in death or requiring a liver transplant after very few doses due to its potency. This is reflected in the fact that it is usually dispensed in a short term (three day and five day) titration pack with far fewer individual doses than other antibiotics. It is for treatment of mild to moderate infections and is often taken as one pill per day. Z-pack has been re-designed to be a one day dosage antibiotic now called Zmax.

Common symptoms of liver damage are:
         Yellow eyes
         Jaundice
         Nausea
         Abdominal pain
         Clay-colored stool
         Dark urine

We are concentrating on reviewing infant liver transplant matters. A liver transplant is the replacement of the liver as required by liver failure in the recipient. Liver failure leading to liver transplant can follow can follow the ingestion of Zithromax® or result from several other sources.

This office is also reviewing claims for Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS) or Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) resulting from Zmax®, Zpack or other precription drug use. These are severe rash conditions affecting the skin, organs and membranes which can cause death by dehydration and/or infection and skin disfigurement after a short period of use of these, or other, prescription drugs.
